We started later than planned (couldn't find things like the other insurance card, the phone chargers, etc), but eventually were packed and hit the road. We hoped all of our bad vacation luck was behind us. Because of the late start, we didn't get to do our planned activity for the first day, the Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center in Blue Springs, MO. We did, however, discover Emma, MO on the map, and stopped there for a light picnic dinner and some pictures.
Later, we decided we needed some more substantial food to make it to our reserved campsite, and stopped in Lawrence, KS (home of Bill Ackerman's (aka Todd's Uncle) Alma Mater) at a grocery store. Most of the hot food counters were closing down, but Lisa found some vegetarian lo mein. Todd decided to walk down the street to the pizza buffet and, well, you can see what happened:

On 7/31: Updated to add links and reference to Bill. Also, the real story on the pizza place is that the police stopped because someone had thrown something on the roof, and they were there when Todd arrived. Then, the guy in front asked him if he'd ever been to a Pizza Street, and he said no, I'm traveling through from Urbana, IL. So, he said, here's a box, take 8 pieces, no charge.

What do you guys do with your dogs when you go camping? We're beginning to plan for our first vacation with a dog, and not sure how to prep for it.
On this trip, their at home with a house/dog sitting teenager.
When we just go camping for a weekend, it depends on the weather if we take them or not. If it looks like it's going to be nearing 100, we leave them home.
When we do take them, they are tied out while we're there. This isn't bad for our dogs as they are at home as well. Our favorite camping activity is hiking, so they just come along. If someone wants to go swimming, than one of us stays behind with the dogs. In our area, we have to watch for ticks. They don't bite the dogs because they're treated, but they can jump from the dogs to us when we least expect it.
The dogs stay in the tent with us. Sometimes I bring mats for them and sometimes they just get the tent floor. It mostly depends on space.
Oh, and some campgrounds charge extra.
